The remembrance ceremony at the National September 11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan is currently underway in New York with former presidents and the current Vice President in attendance, while the US President Donald Trump is set to attend a parallel ceremony at the Pentagon.
Families gathered to read aloud the names of the 2,983 people killed in the 9/11 attacks and the ceremony includes six moments of silence, marking the times each tower was struck, the moment each tower at the World Trade Center fell, and the moments corresponding to the Pentagon attack and the crash of Flight 93.
A new seventh moment of silence was added this year at the conclusion of the name-reading, and it will now be a permanent part of the annual ceremony going forward.
Current US Vice President JD Vance is in attendance in New York, alongside all living former US presidents Bill Clinton, George W Bush and Barack Obama.
A parallel event at the Pentagon is also taking place where President Donald Trump is addressing the nation and commemorating the victims of the attacks.
Tonight, the Tribute in Light installation, twin beams evoking the fallen towers, will again illuminate the night sky over Lower Manhattan, with landmarks across the city and country invited to light their facades in blue from dusk to dawn.
