International aviation experts gathered in Ecuador’s capital this week to discuss the future of “airport cities”, as operators of Quito’s main airport unveiled plans to expand cargo infrastructure and strengthen global connectivity.

The event, ACI Airport Day Quito, brought together industry specialists from Europe, the Middle East and across Latin America to examine how airports can evolve into economic and urban development hubs. The meeting was organised by Airports Council International – Latin America and the Caribbean and hosted by Corporación Quiport, the concessionaire of Mariscal Sucre International Airport.

Participants from countries including the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico shared insights on global trends shaping airport development, focusing on how airports can stimulate investment, create jobs and strengthen logistics networks.

A key message from the conference was the need for closer coordination between airport operators, government authorities, airlines and private sector partners to unlock the economic potential surrounding major aviation hubs.

During the event, Quiport announced plans to expand the airport’s cargo terminal by 5,000 sq m, add a new aircraft stand for cargo operations, and reconfigure the truck staging area to improve logistics efficiency. The projects form part of the airport’s master plan and are expected to be completed by 2030, supporting growth in Ecuador’s international trade.

Further announcements are expected in the coming months, including new international passenger and cargo routes aimed at strengthening the country’s air connectivity.

Ramón Miró, president and chief executive of Quiport, said the event highlighted how modern airports can act as catalysts for economic growth.

“Airport cities represent a vision of the future in which airports evolve into platforms that foster connectivity, investment and opportunities for cities and countries,” he said.

Rafael Echevarne added that forums such as Airport Day are essential for exchanging knowledge and strengthening the competitiveness of the aviation sector across the region.

Quito’s mayor, Pabel Muñoz, also attended the event and highlighted the strategic importance of the city’s airport, which handles around 90 percent of Ecuador’s exports transported by air.

The airport has increasingly positioned itself as a logistics hub for the country, with officials hoping new investments and routes will reinforce its role in connecting Ecuador to global markets.
