Glasgow Prestwick Airport (Prestwick) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN), marking a significant step in strengthening trade and cargo connectivity between China and the United Kingdom.
The agreement was signed during the International Air Transport Association (IATA) North Asia Cargo Day in Guangzhou and reflects the growing commercial relationship between the two airports. It also builds on Prestwick’s expanding role as a strategic UK gateway for Asian e-commerce imports and the export of premium Scottish products to international markets.
The MoU comes at a time of continued growth in trade flows between Asia and the UK. Over the past year, Prestwick has increased its prominence within the air cargo sector, supporting rising volumes of inbound e-commerce traffic from Asia while facilitating the export of high-value Scottish goods, including salmon and whisky. This dual focus has enabled the airport to strengthen its position within global supply chains and provide enhanced connectivity for both importers and exporters.
The agreement establishes a framework for closer collaboration between Prestwick and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, one of Asia’s leading cargo hubs. Through this partnership, both airports will work together to explore opportunities for cargo development, improve operational cooperation, exchange industry knowledge, and enhance network connectivity. The objective is to support more efficient and resilient trade routes between China, the UK and wider international markets.
Commenting on the agreement, Jules Matteoni, executive director of Glasgow Prestwick Airport, said: “This agreement gives Prestwick a direct platform to work with one of Asia’s most important cargo gateways at a time when e-commerce growth, capacity pressure and demand for faster export routes are reshaping trade between China and the UK.”
His comments reflect broader changes taking place across the global logistics sector. The rapid expansion of e-commerce, coupled with increasing demand for efficient cargo handling and reliable transport links, is creating new opportunities for airports capable of delivering speed, capacity and operational flexibility. Prestwick has positioned itself to meet these requirements through its available runway capacity, efficient cargo infrastructure and strong surface transport connections.
Matteoni added: “Prestwick’s value is its ability to turn available runway capacity into reliable cargo handling, fast landside access, and direct trade lanes that work in both directions, supporting Asian goods moving into the United Kingdom and Scottish exports moving into high value overseas markets.”
The airport’s growing network underlines this capability. Prestwick currently handles 15 scheduled cargo services each week to and from mainland China, including regular services connecting directly with Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. In addition, the airport supports three scheduled weekly services to Hong Kong, further strengthening its links with key Asian markets and reinforcing its role as a gateway for international trade.
These connections have become increasingly important as businesses seek greater supply chain resilience and more direct access to global markets. By providing efficient routes for both inbound and outbound cargo, Prestwick is helping to reduce transit times, improve reliability, and create new opportunities for trade growth. The partnership with Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is expected to contribute further to these objectives by encouraging deeper operational cooperation and identifying opportunities for future network expansion.
The signing of the memorandum also represents another milestone in Prestwick’s long-term cargo strategy.
