  • The FAA has granted Boeing an exemption allowing it to sell an additional 35 777F freighters after new emissions rules take effect in January 2028.
  • The waiver allows 777F sales to continue for three more years as Boeing works towards entry into service of the 777-8 Freighter, expected around 2029.
  • Boeing said the decision will help cargo carriers meet air freight demand while maintaining access to new-build large freighter capacity.

The Federal Aviation Administration said on Thursday it approved a ‌waiver of airplane emissions rules to allow Boeing (BA.N), opens new tab to sell another 35 777F freighters after 2028. The waiver will allow Boeing to sell the planes for another three years after new emissions rules take effect on January 1, 2028, which would have barred the sale of the plane. Boeing in December 2025 had requested approval, citing strong customer demand and a delay in the next-generation plane’s certification.

Boeing welcomed the FAA’s decision, pointing to continued demand for dedicated air freight capacity and the need to bridge the period before the 777-8F enters service.

“We welcome the FAA’s decision, which will support cargo carriers as they serve growing demand for air freight with the most efficient large freighter in service today,” a Boeing spokesperson told Air Cargo Week.

“With the exemption, Boeing can meet some of the anticipated customer demand for newer, more fuel-efficient airplanes until the new 777-8 Freighter enters service.”
