  • Rising e-commerce demand is driving the need for flexible, efficient air cargo solutions, with multi-role aircraft like the D328MR enabling operators to combine passenger and cargo missions, reduce fleet complexity, and cut operating costs while meeting environmental targets.
  • The D328MR’s design supports rapid reconfiguration, STOL performance, and modular cabins, allowing fast turnarounds at major hubs and remote airfields, optimising scheduling, maximising revenue, and improving accessibility to challenging locations.
  • Proven operational versatility, exemplified by the C-146A “Wolfhound,” demonstrates the platform’s reliability for diverse missions, supporting both regional logistics and special operations while providing a sustainable, fuel-efficient solution for replacing ageing turboprops.

The rapid expansion of e-commerce has significantly increased the demand for air cargo services. This trend is expected to continue, leading to a greater need for flexible logistics solutions, particularly for express and overnight shipping. Aviation providers need to adapt to meet evolving needs as consumers expect faster international deliveries. Airlines and logistics companies are also investing in more fuel-efficient and technologically advanced aircraft to reduce operating costs and comply with environmental regulations, showing great potential for aircraft offering multi-role operations.

Utilising the same aircraft for both passenger and cargo operations reduces the need for separate fleets, simplifies maintenance, and reduces operational complexity, leading to cost savings. Airlines and logistics companies are also investing in more fuel-efficient and technologically advanced turboprops to reduce operating costs and comply with environmental regulations.

The multi-role sector has always been a key market for the in-service D328® thanks to its versatility, robustness, reliability and performance capabilities,” Nils Heuer, Deutsche Aircraft’s Sales Director, stated.

“A diverse portfolio of operators is already utilising the D328® for a wide variety of special missions tasks. The next-generation D328MR turboprop is poised to provide a reliable and sustainable solution logistics in regional areas. and over 2,000 ageing aircraft on the market that will need to be replaced, the versatile, fuel-efficient D328MR is a set to meet the demands of an evolving market.”

East of operations

For crews operating the D328MR in dual roles, specific flight crew training is essential depending on the MR roles. Additionally, training programmes available through external partners can provide valuable expertise for diverse mission types. The aircraft’s design facilitates ease of operation for diverse mission types through its flexible cabin/quick-conversion capability.

The Garmin flight deck is easily capable of integrating MR relevant systems, and there are several dedicated hard points for MR equipment integration. Moreover, MR relevant options like IFOD (In-Flight Operable Door), gravel kit, etc., further enhance the aircraft’s adaptability for diverse missions.

Fast turnaround in challenging environments

The D328MR prides itself on its fast turnarounds, thanks to its optimal size, modular cabin, ease of loading and unloading passengers and cargo, which makes it well-equipped for operations at major hubs or remote outstations, facilitating transitions between passenger and cargo configurations.

This offers significant advantages for airlines and operators as the aircraft can be adapted to meet fluctuating demands for passenger or cargo services, which shall improve efficiency by optimising scheduling by minimising empty legs and maximising revenue potential. The D328MR is based on an aircraft platform which offers a break-even load factor of 55 percent, helping immensely in making operations profitable even with low demand.

“The D328MR offers unrivalled accessibility to challenging airfields with short runways, enabling operators to start missions from anywhere,” Heuer highlighted.

“Its right size, exceptional STOL performance, high wing configuration, gravel kit option and unpaved runway capabilities allow this multi-role turboprop to take off and land anywhere, facilitating the transport of people and/or goods between remote locations in a much more efficient and sustainable way than any other aircraft available today.

“A testament to the operational versatility and the MR capabilities of the platform is the C-146A “Wolfhound”, which is the current in-service D328® MR commuter turboprop. The C146-A recently surpassed an incredible 200,000 operational flight hours and is an integral part of the US Air Force Special Operations Command since 2011. This multi-mission workhorse has flown critical missions around the world, proving its exceptional versatility and strategic capabilities.”
